Junior Architect

SAIKLEY ARCHITECTS is a small, growing firm in Alameda. The firm’s primary focus is residential design, with some commercial and educational projects. Currently we are working on many residential additions; a few new houses; childcare centers; and master planning and renovations for two large commercial/industrial projects at the developing Alameda Point community. Our design ranges from new and contemporary to historic preservation.

Our office is informal, collaborative, dynamic. There is a lot of opportunity for professional development, and for being part of the growth of the firm. Everyone in the firm has a hand in design; production; detailing; construction administration; coordinating with clients, consultants, and contractors; and business development. Working in our firm you would be juggling a variety of projects and tasks, with varied roles on different projects. We are located in a beautiful, light-filled office on Clement Avenue in Alameda, one mile from the Fruitvale BART and near Park Street.

We are looking for a Junior Architect with 2-4 years’ experience to join our team of 5 professionals. Working in our firm, you would have the opportunity to quickly develop skills and take on increasing responsibility for projects, and to be a key member of a growing firm.

We offer competitive salary and benefits. Our office culture and project types are such that work hours are reasonable and flexible.

Qualifications

  • Professional degree in architecture. Licensed or working toward California Architect license.
  • Very proficient and fast in AutoCAD, and 3-d modeling, either Sketchup or Rhino. Experience with Adobe Creative Suite. Revit a plus. (We currently use AutoCAD but may switch to Revit in the next year or two).
  • Attention to detail and accuracy.
  • Ability to produce a solid set of construction drawings, with direction from principal or project manager.
  • Good organizational and interpersonal skills. Ability to effectively coordinate with team members, clients, consultants, and contractors.
  • Good design skills. Ability to develop a design from concept through CD’s, with oversight from principal or project manager.
  • Good technical skills. Knowledge of structures, materials and building systems. Experience in drafting wood-frame construction details. Understanding of the convergence of aesthetic and technical design.
  • Good freehand drawing skills, for sketching ideas and communication (not needed for presentation).
  • Knowledge of California code issues and entitlement processes. Ability to navigate codes and permit processes, with oversight from principal or project manager.
  • At least one year’s experience working on single-family residential projects, as well as interest in commercial projects. Enjoyment of complex problem-solving.
  • Experience with Construction Administration, or actual hands-on construction experience, is a big plus.
