Repurposed Victorian
Alameda, California
A young couple bought this Victorian with the intention of turning it into a duplex and remodeling and renting out the upper unit. However, they ran into multiple zoning issues that threatened to block the use of the house as two units. Saikley Architects negotiated with the Planning Department to legalize the house as a duplex. On a very slim budget, we then updated the second floor and added a kitchen into a previous rear porch addition. We aimed to keep the character of the old house while making a comfortable, bright and easily-rentable income unit. The second unit later made it possible for extended relatives to live together in this home.

Add to Houzz Ideabook“ “It was an absolute pleasure working with Alexandra! We had a very tricky permit issue on our house and she went to bat for us with the city in a HUGE way. We couldn’t have gotten our project started, much less finished, without her! We were so grateful for her knowledge, her thoughtfulness, and her attention to detail. Would definitely recommend!” – Client
