San Francisco City Hall

San Francisco, California

San Francisco City Hall was damaged in the 1989 Loma Prieta earthquake. The extensive preservation repair project that followed required not only reparations to the building and material conservation, but accessibility, life safety and tenant improvements.

Project Credit: Alexandra Sheets Saikley was project manager with preservation architect-of-record Carey & Co., who won numerous preservation and design awards for the project. Originally designed by Bakewell and Brown and completed in 1916, San Francisco City Hall is central to the Civic Center National Historic Landmark District; known as the nation’s finest example of Beaux Arts architecture.
