Ranch-to-Craftsman

San Francisco Bay Area

The goal for this ranch house renovation project was to make a beautiful and ecological house that uses space efficiently. In converting their small ranch house to a larger, simplified Craftsman-style home, we retained most of the original house, only rearranging a few walls to improve interior flow. A partial second story was added, and a covered patio space was transformed to a dining and family room.

Several steps were followed to ensure that the house be completed within a very modest budget, including: careful space planning, advanced framing in structural design, and architectural details designed to balance aesthetic appeal with simplicity of construction. Ecological steps that add ongoing value for the family include the use of systems and principles focused on energy efficiency, high performance, healthy environment and maximal daylighting, and thermal mass and exterior shade structures to moderate temperatures.
